Callie Hauser has a lot on her plate. She's helping out her best friend, who was recently hurt in an accident. She's settling in as the new chief of police in a small town in the New Jersey Pine Barrens where her mostly male staff resent her presence and there's recently been a sharp uptick in overdoses. Her alcoholic mother, with whom she has a fraught relationship, at best, has inexplicably disappeared, which leads to Callie's reopening of a thirty year old case involving an abandoned infant that her mother found when she was a teenager. As all of these events begin to meld together, Cassie isn't sure who she can trust and what her life will look like when she gets to the other side. For the most part, I enjoyed this book. The characters are well fleshed out and there are some (mostly) surprising twists and turns. It does jump between timelines a lot, which can be hard to follow, but the author does a pretty good job of keeping you on track.
