S. Eliot I remember vividly the day I got my own library card. I was four years old, and painfully shy. The counter was at eye level, and the woman behind it looked huge and terrifying to me.But somehow I got the courage to tell her what I wanted and then to reach up to carefully print my first and last name on the line. It was as if the world suddenly opened for me; I was handed my ticket to a world beyond my own, to perspectives different from my own, to views of other lives, truths, hopes and dreams. I’m an old woman now, and as I look back over my life I’m pretty certain I wouldn’t be alive if there hadn’t been books, and public libraries in my life. But public libraries are about much more than just books; they’re about people. They’re about us all. The 20th Century Argentine author, Jorge Luis Borges, said, “I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.” For me, that is precisely what a library is: A free and perfect dwelling place that includes and belongs to ALL of us, a sanctuary, a place we can go to find ourselves when what we see around us may leave us feeling different and alone. We’re very lucky here, in these rural parts of Huron County where many of us live miles away from clothing stores, restaurants, doctors or a movie theater, and some of us live in a town where there isn’t a bank or store or gas station anymore, but where there is still a public library. There are more public libraries in Ohio than there are McDonald’s, almost twice as many as there are Starbucks, and there are four times as many public libraries as there are Walmarts. We need libraries in the same way that we need each other. They are the living rooms of our small towns, where we can each go to connect, to learn, to rest, to get help, to explore, to play, to disagree with one another, to belong. We live in a world of misinformation and deep political and personal divide, where we routinely find suffering and blame on social media and the nightly news. It’s hard to know sometimes what we can do that might matter. I believe what we can do is simply to be our best selves.Libraries offer us one of our best hopes that we might become the best that we can be.
