Book Facts For Fun! Did you know? It is estimated that there are about 170 million unique books published (including self-published and digital works) since the invention of the printing press. The Library of Congress has over 38.6 million cataloged books and other printed materials. The single largest private book collection consists of 1.5 million volumes and belongs to John Q. Benham of Avoca, Indiana. He has books stored in his six-car garage, throughout his two-story house and outside under tarps. The real question is how many does he have in his bathroom? The fear of running out of something to read is called Abibliophobia. Maybe that explains John Q. Benham’s motivation. On estimate, there are over 900,000 new books published each year. That’s about 899,975 more than James Patterson publishes each year. The author with the most published books is L. Ron Hubbard with 1,084 works to his credit. His first written piece was published in 1934 and his last was published in 2006. James Patterson is closing in on 300 published books… he has some major catching up to do. The longest book in the world is Remembrance of Things Past by French author Marcel Proust. It has over 9,609,000 characters (including spaces). That’s just over 34,319 tweets The most expensive book in the world is The Codex Leicester. It was Leonardo Da Vinci’s science diary. It sold for $30,800,000 in 1994. That would equal approximately $53,500,000 today. That seems like a lot considering you can buy a copy on Amazon for much less... like more than $53,499,950 less. And finally – the Harvard University library has four law books bound in human skin. Does anyone else think: Silence of the Lambs? No, this is an operating renewal of the Huron County Community Library, with locations in Greenwich, North Fairfield, Wakeman, and Willard. Why is the Library on the ballot November 4, 2025? The current levy is set to expire soon. The Library first went on the ballot in May 2011 for operating money after State funding was reduced nearly 35%. State funding remains uncertain. This is a renewal of the 1.275 mil levy. This is not a new tax. How much will the levy cost me? An owner of a $100,000 home will pay $25.70 per year with the homestead exemption on the original .975 mils. Who is voting on this levy? The operating levy will be put before the residents of the entire library service area: Willard City Schools, Western Reserve School District, and South Central Schools. What kind of library expenses will the operating levy cover? The operating levy will be used for material purchases, programming, equipment, supplies, and overhead to operate the library. Why does the operating levy matter? In a time when state funding for libraries is becoming uncertain, the stability of the levy is more important than ever. Nearly 40% of our funding comes from our local property tax levy, and without it, we’d face tough choices regarding the services you rely on. For answers to additional questions please contact Laura Lee Wilson, Director or Joshua Figley, Fiscal Officer 419-933-2544
