THE ASCENT

When Detroit cop, Kurt Argento, loses his wife and his job, he decides it's time for a change of scenery, so he heads west across the country.  While in a small Missouri town, he interrupts the attempted assault of a young girl.  The would-be assailant is injured pretty badly.  He also turns out to be the sheriff's brother.  When Argento is picked up, he's badly beaten and railroaded onto the next bus heading to the local maximum-security prison.  Once there he encounters a malfunctioning security system and a small tour group that includes the governor's daughter.  The unlikely entourage must come together to get the girl and themselves to safety.  Unfortunately, they have to go through six floors of violent inmates to do that.  I loved this book!  Yes, it's violent and crude and won't be for everybody,  but it's action-packed and there's wry humor and good vs. evil.  You can easily imagine it coming to life on the big screen like the old "Die Hard" movies.    You know pretty much how it's going to work out, but that's OK because the trip there is a blast.  I could read it again right now, but I'll try to wait and hope Plantinga is hard at work on his next one.
