Shearwater is a tiny island between Tasmania and Antarctica; in other words, the middle of nowhere. It is the home of the world's largest seed bank, tended to by a handful of scientists and researchers who battle the dark, brooding landscape while preserving the seeds of earth's future. Unfortunately, climate change is destroying the island and the only people left are the widowed caretaker, Dominic, and his three children. When a woman mysteriously washes ashore, the family dynamic is upended. Dominic and family have some secrets and so does their unexpected guest, Rowan. To save themselves and the seeds, a level of trust has to be reached before it's too late. This could never be considered light reading, but it's still difficult to put down. You become very invested in the lives and their stories. It's a book about love and family; about nature and an uncertain future.
