THE JACKAL'S MISTRESS

The Civil War has been raging on for years when Libby Steadman encounters a badly wounded Union Army captain who has been left to die. Libby, along with two former slaves that her husband freed before going to war and her young niece, has been running the family gristmill, helping to feed the struggling Confederate Army. Libby takes the soldier into her home to try to nurse him back to health, with the hope that a Yankee woman would do the same for her husband, who, last she knew, was a prisoner up north. But harboring a Union soldier is a dangerous business and Libby is already viewed with suspicion by most of the locals since her husband freed their slaves. As the soldier heals, it becomes evident that geography has little to do with what kind of person someone is, especially in hard times. Loosely based on real life events, this turned out to a really good book. Libby is a force to be reckoned with and her niece is a delight. It's a war story and a love story that everyone can enjoy.
